Which ancient wonder stood in the city of Alexandria and guided ships into its harbor?

The story behind the answer

The Lighthouse of Alexandria stood on the island of Pharos and guided ships into Alexandria’s harbor in ancient Egypt.

Construction probably began during the reign of Ptolemy I Soter and was completed under his son, Ptolemy II Philadelphus, in the early third century BCE. The tower became known as the Pharos of Alexandria, and its name influenced the word for lighthouse in several modern languages, including French phare and Italian faro.

Ancient accounts describe a monumental structure with several levels, topped by a statue and a fire that served as a navigational signal. Its exact height is uncertain, but it may have been more than 100 metres tall. Earthquakes damaged the lighthouse repeatedly between the 10th and 14th centuries, and its remaining stones were later reused in the Citadel of Qaitbay. It was one of the traditional Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, alongside monuments such as the Colossus of Rhodes and the Great Pyramid of Giza.
