Which ancient wonder stood in Alexandria, Egypt?
Answer
Lighthouse of Alexandria
Answer
Lighthouse of Alexandria
The Lighthouse of Alexandria stood on the island of Pharos beside Alexandria, Egypt. Also called the Pharos of Alexandria, it guided ships into the city’s busy harbour and was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Construction probably began during the reign of Ptolemy I Soter and was completed under his son, Ptolemy II Philadelphus, in the third century BCE. Ancient accounts describe a very tall, multi-level structure topped by a fire or reflective signal. Its precise original height is uncertain, with modern estimates commonly ranging from about 100 to 130 metres.
Earthquakes damaged the lighthouse repeatedly between the 10th and 14th centuries. Stone from its remains was later reused in the Qaitbay Citadel, built on the site in the 15th century. “Pharos” became a word for lighthouse in several languages.
