Which ancient wonder stood in Alexandria and was traditionally said to be about 100 meters tall?

The story behind the answer

The Lighthouse of Alexandria was the ancient wonder that stood in Alexandria and was traditionally said to be about 100 meters tall.

Also called the Pharos of Alexandria, the lighthouse was built on the island of Pharos to guide ships into the busy harbor of the Ptolemaic capital of Egypt. Construction is usually dated to the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus in the early third century BC, and the architect is traditionally identified as Sostratus of Cnidus.

Ancient descriptions suggest a tiered structure with a square lower section, an octagonal middle section, and a cylindrical upper section. A fire burned at the top, while reflective material may have helped project its light or signal over the water. Exact height estimates vary because the building no longer survives.

Earthquakes damaged the lighthouse repeatedly, especially between the 10th and 14th centuries. Stone from its remains was later reused in fortifications, including the Citadel of Qaitbay. The name “pharos” influenced words for lighthouse in several modern languages.
