Which ancient wonder stood in Alexandria and was destroyed by earthquakes?
Answer
Lighthouse of Alexandria
Answer
Lighthouse of Alexandria
The Lighthouse of Alexandria was the ancient wonder that stood in Alexandria and was destroyed by earthquakes.
Also called the Pharos of Alexandria, it was built on the island of Pharos to guide ships into the busy harbour of Ptolemaic Alexandria in Egypt. Construction is generally associated with the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus in the third century BCE, and the architect is traditionally identified as Sostratus of Cnidus.
The lighthouse was built in several levels and was probably among the tallest human-made structures of the ancient world. A series of earthquakes between the 10th and 14th centuries caused progressive damage, and its remaining stones were later reused in the Citadel of Qaitbay. Unlike the Colossus of Rhodes, the lighthouse served a practical navigational purpose.
