Which ancient wonder stood in Alexandria and was built to guide ships into its harbor?

The story behind the answer

The Lighthouse of Alexandria was the ancient wonder built to guide ships into Alexandria’s harbor.

Also called the Pharos of Alexandria, it stood on the island of Pharos off the Egyptian coast. Construction is generally placed in the early third century BCE during the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus, after Alexandria had become a major port and center of the Ptolemaic kingdom. Ancient writers describe a very tall, multi-level structure topped by a fire and a reflective surface.

Earthquakes damaged the lighthouse repeatedly between the tenth and fourteenth centuries, and its remains were eventually dismantled. Blocks believed to come from the structure were reused in the Qaitbay Citadel, built on the site in the fifteenth century. The name “pharos” became a word for lighthouse in several languages, including French phare and Italian faro.
