Which ancient wonder stood in Alexandria and served as a lighthouse?
Answer
Lighthouse of Alexandria
Answer
Lighthouse of Alexandria
The Lighthouse of Alexandria was the ancient wonder that served as a lighthouse.
Also called the Pharos of Alexandria, it was built on the island of Pharos beside the Egyptian port of Alexandria. Construction probably began during the reign of Ptolemy I Soter and was completed under his son, Ptolemy II Philadelphus, in the third century BCE.
Ancient writers described a tall, multi-level tower topped by a statue, probably associated with Zeus or another deity. A fire and reflective surface helped guide ships toward the harbour, although later accounts may exaggerate the tower’s height and optical technology.
Earthquakes damaged the structure repeatedly between the tenth and fourteenth centuries. Its stones were eventually reused in other construction, including the Citadel of Qaitbay, which stands near the ancient lighthouse site. The Pharos gave its name to the word “pharos,” used in several languages for a lighthouse.
