Which ancient wonder stood in Alexandria and guided ships with a famous lighthouse?

The story behind the answer

The Lighthouse of Alexandria was the ancient wonder that guided ships into Alexandria’s harbor.

Also called the Pharos of Alexandria, it was built on the island of Pharos off the coast of Alexandria in Ptolemaic Egypt. Construction is generally associated with the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus and is usually dated to the third century BCE.

Ancient descriptions portray a large multi-level tower topped by a fire and a reflective system that helped make the light visible from a distance. Its exact height is uncertain, but ancient and later estimates commonly place it somewhere around 100 meters or more, making it one of the tallest structures of the ancient world.

Earthquakes damaged the lighthouse repeatedly between the 10th and 14th centuries, and its remains eventually disappeared. Stones from the site may have been reused in later construction, including the medieval Citadel of Qaitbay, built nearby in the 15th century.
