Which ancient wonder stood at the entrance to the harbor of Rhodes?

The story behind the answer

The Colossus of Rhodes stood at the entrance to the harbor of Rhodes. It was a monumental bronze statue of the sun god Helios, erected on the Greek island of Rhodes after a successful defense against a siege.

The statue was built between about 292 and 280 BCE by the sculptor Chares of Lindos. Ancient accounts describe it as approximately 70 cubits high, often interpreted as around 32 metres, although the exact design and location remain uncertain.

The Colossus was created after Demetrius I of Macedon abandoned his siege of Rhodes in 305 BCE. The Rhodians sold the abandoned siege equipment and used the proceeds to finance the monument.

An earthquake toppled the statue around 226 BCE, and it was not rebuilt. Later writers popularized the image of the Colossus straddling the harbor entrance, but that pose would have been structurally impractical and is not supported by the strongest historical evidence. It was one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world.
