Which ancient wonder still survives in Egypt near Cairo?
Answer
Great Pyramid of Giza
Answer
Great Pyramid of Giza
The Great Pyramid of Giza is the ancient wonder that still survives near Cairo, Egypt.
Also called the Pyramid of Khufu, it was built during Egypt’s Fourth Dynasty as a royal tomb for Pharaoh Khufu. Construction probably took place during the twenty-sixth century BCE. The pyramid originally stood about 146.6 metres high, but the loss of its outer casing and summit reduced its present height.
The Great Pyramid was the largest human-made structure in the world for thousands of years. It was built from millions of stone blocks, including limestone and granite, and formed part of a larger funerary complex on the Giza Plateau. Its precise construction methods remain debated, although evidence shows organized labor, planning, quarrying, and transport.
The Great Pyramid is sometimes confused with the entire Giza pyramid complex or with the nearby Sphinx. The surviving ancient wonder is specifically the pyramid of Khufu. The other six traditional wonders were destroyed by earthquakes, fire, war, or gradual decay.
