Which ancient wonder is the only one still substantially standing?

The story behind the answer

The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only ancient wonder still substantially standing.

Built for the Egyptian pharaoh Khufu, the Great Pyramid was completed around 2560 BCE at Giza. It originally stood about 146.6 metres high and remained the tallest human-made structure for roughly 3,800 years.

The pyramid formed part of a large funerary complex that included temples, causeways and other pyramids. Most of its smooth white limestone casing was removed over later centuries, so the stepped core visible today does not show its original appearance. The pyramid’s summit is also missing.

The other six traditional wonders were destroyed by earthquakes, fire, warfare or gradual decay, although the historical evidence for some—especially the Hanging Gardens of Babylon—is uncertain. The Great Pyramid’s survival reflects its massive stone construction, desert setting and the durability of its carefully engineered base.
