The ancient Mexican city featuring the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon is Teotihuacan. Its ruins lie about 40 kilometers northeast of modern Mexico City in the Valley of Mexico.
Teotihuacan became one of the largest and most influential cities in the ancient Americas. The city’s central Avenue of the Dead runs between major ceremonial buildings, including the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon. The Pyramid of the Sun was built around 200 CE and is roughly 65 meters high, making it one of the largest pyramidal structures in the Americas.
The city flourished for centuries but was largely abandoned around the seventh or eighth century. Its original inhabitants’ name for the city is unknown. The name Teotihuacan comes from the Nahuatl-speaking Aztecs, who encountered the ruins long after the city’s decline. This is why Teotihuacan should not be confused with an Aztec city, Tikal, Palenque, or Chichen Itza.
