Which ancient Indian port, known as Barygaza, is identified with modern Bharuch in Gujarat?

The story behind the answer

Bharuch is the modern Indian city identified with the ancient port of Barygaza.

Located on the Narmada River in Gujarat, Bharuch was an important commercial center connecting inland India with maritime routes across the Arabian Sea. Ancient Greek and Roman writers knew the port as Barygaza, while Indian sources used names such as Bharukaccha.

The Periplus of the Erythraean Sea describes Barygaza as a major destination for ships carrying goods between the western Indian coast, Arabia, East Africa, and the Roman world. Cargoes included textiles, spices, gems, ivory, metals, and other luxury products.

Bharuch was not an overland Silk Road terminus in the same sense as a Central Asian oasis. It belonged to the maritime networks that connected with the wider Silk Road system. Modern Bharuch remains in Gujarat, near the Narmada’s Gulf of Khambhat outlet.
