Which ancient Greek work contains the best-known detailed version of Pandora’s myth?

The story behind the answer

Works and Days contains the best-known detailed ancient version of Pandora’s myth. The poem is attributed to Hesiod and combines practical advice, moral teaching, genealogy, and stories about humanity’s condition.

Its Pandora passage follows the story of Prometheus’s theft of fire. Zeus orders the gods to create a woman, sends her to Epimetheus, and gives her a sealed storage jar. When she opens it, evils escape into the world, while hope remains inside.

The Theogony also mentions Pandora, but Works and Days provides the fuller narrative sequence. Neither Homer’s Iliad nor Odyssey gives the standard account of Pandora’s jar.

Later translations and retellings changed important details. The original poem says jar rather than box, and the interpretation of hope has remained controversial because the ancient wording allows more than one reading.
