Which ancient Greek sculpture in the Louvre depicts Nike, the winged goddess of victory, standing on a ship’s prow?
Answer
Winged Victory of Samothrace
Answer
Winged Victory of Samothrace
The Louvre sculpture depicting Nike standing on a ship’s prow is the Winged Victory of Samothrace.
The marble statue was created around the 2nd century BCE and dedicated in the Sanctuary of the Great Gods on the island of Samothrace. Its ship-shaped base suggests that it commemorated a naval victory, although the exact battle and patron remain uncertain.
Austrian archaeologist Charles Champoiseau discovered the sculpture in fragments in 1863. It was transported to France and gradually reconstructed, with the monument installed at the top of the Louvre’s Daru staircase in 1884. The figure’s head and arms have never been found.
The sculpture is celebrated for its dramatic treatment of wind-blown drapery. Its wings, body, and clothing create the impression that Nike has just landed on the prow, combining religious symbolism with Hellenistic theatrical movement.
