Hesiod wrote that Pandora was the first woman. The claim appears in Hesiod’s Works and Days, one of the two major surviving poems associated with him.
Hesiod presents Pandora’s creation as part of Zeus’s response to Prometheus’s theft of fire. The story links the arrival of woman, labor, and human suffering within a broader account of the human condition. Hesiod also discusses Pandora in the Theogony, though the Works and Days gives the fuller narrative of her creation and the jar.
Homer is a tempting answer because he is the best-known early Greek epic poet, but the Pandora story is not told in the Homeric poems. Sappho and Pindar were important Greek poets from later periods, yet neither is the source of the foundational Pandora account.
