Which ancient Greek poet gives the earliest surviving account of Pandora’s creation?

The story behind the answer

Hesiod gives the earliest surviving account of Pandora’s creation.

Hesiod was an ancient Greek poet usually dated to the late eighth or early seventh century BCE. His Works and Days includes the narrative of Pandora, Prometheus, fire, and the spread of evils. His Theogony also mentions Pandora-related material, though the Works and Days account is the fuller source for the jar episode.

Hesiod’s poems are among the earliest surviving Greek literary works, but they are not modern historical reports. They preserve mythic traditions in poetic form, and their exact dates remain approximate. Homer is often associated with early Greek epic, yet the surviving Homeric poems do not provide the same complete Pandora narrative that appears in Hesiod.
