Hope is the ancient Greek deity personified as Elpis, the figure associated with what remained inside Pandora’s jar.
Elpis is the Greek personification of hope and appears in the Pandora tradition as the last entity left in the container. Hesiod’s wording does not turn Elpis into a long, independent character scene; instead, the figure’s presence gives the myth its most enduring question about whether hope is a blessing, a consolation, or something more ambiguous.
In ancient Greek religion and literature, personifications could represent human qualities as divine or semi-divine figures. Elpis is therefore not simply an abstract English word inserted by modern translators. She belongs to a broader Greek tradition of representing concepts such as justice, victory, and memory as named figures.
Readers sometimes assume that the myth calls the surviving figure “Hope” because the story has a straightforward happy ending. Hesiod’s text is more restrained, and translations differ in how they present Elpis’s status and significance.
