Which ancient civilization built the city of Tikal?

The story behind the answer

The Maya civilization built the ancient city of Tikal.

Tikal was one of the largest and most influential Maya cities. It stood in the tropical lowlands of what is now northern Guatemala and became a major political, economic, and ceremonial center during the Classic period of Maya civilization.

The city’s monumental architecture includes tall temple pyramids, palaces, plazas, causeways, and an extensive system of reservoirs. Tikal’s rulers recorded dynastic events and religious ceremonies in inscriptions using the Maya writing system. The city reached major prominence between about 200 and 900 CE.

Tikal should not be confused with the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan or the Inca city of Machu Picchu. It was abandoned as a major urban center by the end of the 10th century, although Maya communities continued to live in the broader region. UNESCO designated Tikal a World Heritage Site in 1979.
