Which ancient city in Peru was built by the Inca ruler Pachacuti?

The story behind the answer

Machu Picchu was built in Peru by the Inca ruler Pachacuti.

The mountain settlement was constructed in the 15th century, during the expansion of the Inca Empire. Archaeologists generally associate its creation with Pachacuti, who ruled from about 1438 until 1471 and transformed Cusco into the centre of a powerful Andean state.

Machu Picchu stands at about 2,430 metres above sea level in the Andes, above the Urubamba Valley. Its terraces, stone buildings, drainage systems and carefully fitted masonry show sophisticated planning in a steep, earthquake-prone environment. The site was probably a royal estate or ceremonial and administrative centre.

The settlement was not the Inca capital; Cusco held that role. Hiram Bingham brought international attention to the site in 1911, although local people already knew of it. Machu Picchu was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
