Stephens defeated fellow American Madison Keys 6–3, 6–0 in the final on September 9, 2017. It was Stephens’s first Grand Slam singles title and completed an extraordinary comeback: she had missed much of the season after foot surgery and entered the tournament using a protected ranking.

She was unseeded, yet beat Dominika Cibulková, Julia Görges, Anastasija Sevastova and Venus Williams on the way to the final. Her victory made her the second unseeded woman in the Open Era to win the US Open, after Kim Clijsters in 2009. The result also produced the tournament’s first all-American women's final since Serena Williams played Venus Williams in 2002.

The final is sometimes confused with the 2017 US Open semifinal between Keys and CoCo Vandeweghe, or with Serena Williams’s many US Open titles. Serena did not play the 2017 tournament because she was pregnant, while defending champion Angelique Kerber lost in the first round.
