Kroger is the American supermarket chain headquartered in Cincinnati that is the largest in the United States by supermarket revenue.
Bernard Kroger opened the company’s first grocery store in Cincinnati in 1883. The business expanded into a national chain and now operates under several regional banners, including Ralphs, Fred Meyer, King Soopers, Smith’s and Harris Teeter.
A common mix-up is Walmart. Walmart is the larger overall retailer and a major grocery seller, but it is generally classified as a mass merchant or supercenter operator rather than the largest conventional supermarket chain. Kroger’s supermarket distinction is why it is the expected answer.
Kroger also operates pharmacies, fuel centers and private-label brands such as Simple Truth and Kroger Brand, making it much more than a single store banner.
