The American stoner metal band that released the 1994 album 'Stoner Witch' was Melvins.
Released on October 18, 1994, 'Stoner Witch' was Melvins' seventh studio album and their second release for Atlantic Records. The band recorded it at A&M Studios in Hollywood with producer Garth Richardson, also known as GGGarth, and engineer Joe Barresi. Much of the tracking was completed in single takes during a 19-day recording period.
Melvins formed in Montesano, Washington, and became known for combining sludge metal's weight with punk energy, experimental structures, and a deliberately abrasive sense of humor. Although the album is often associated with stoner metal, it has also been described as grunge, sludge metal, alternative metal, and alternative rock.
The title is not a reference to another band: drummer Dale Crover and friends reportedly used the phrase for “stoner chicks” at their high school. Common mix-ups include Fu Manchu, Sleep, and Kyuss, all important names in stoner rock, but none released this album. 'Stoner Witch' was reissued by Third Man Records in 2016 after being largely out of print for years.
