Hostess Brands filed for bankruptcy in 2012 before its famous snack-cake brands returned under new ownership.
Hostess Brands entered Chapter 11 in January 2012 after years of financial problems, high labor costs, pension obligations, and declining sales. A nationwide strike by bakery workers in November 2012 disrupted production and contributed to the company’s liquidation.
Hostess announced that it would wind down operations and sell its brands and factories. Twinkies, Ho Hos, Ding Dongs, and other products were later acquired by different buyers. Apollo Global Management and C. Dean Metropoulos helped bring several of the best-known brands back to stores in 2013.
The case is often simplified as a strike-related collapse, but the company had already faced serious debt and operational problems before the strike. The later brand revival was not a return of the same corporate structure.
