Which American Romantic painter is known for large-scale landscapes of the Rocky Mountains?

The story behind the answer

The American Romantic painter known for large-scale landscapes of the Rocky Mountains was Albert Bierstadt.

Bierstadt became famous for sweeping, dramatically lit views of the American West, especially the Rocky Mountains. His monumental canvases transformed sketches and observations from western expeditions into theatrical landscapes filled with luminous skies, distant peaks, waterfalls, forests, and tiny human figures.

Born in Solingen, Prussia, in 1830, Bierstadt moved with his family to Massachusetts and later studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. In 1859 he joined Colonel Frederick W. Lander’s survey expedition through the Rocky Mountain region, gathering sketches and photographs that informed later studio paintings. His The Rocky Mountains, Lander’s Peak, completed in 1863, became a defining example.

Bierstadt is associated with the second generation of the Hudson River School and is also linked with the Rocky Mountain School. His idealized scenery helped Eastern audiences imagine the grandeur of the West, though his compositions often heightened nature’s scale and drama.
