Which American rival can player two control in the original Street Fighter?

The story behind the answer

In the original Street Fighter, player two can control Ken Masters.

Ken is Ryu’s American rival, former training partner, and close friend. In the 1987 arcade game, a second player can challenge the first player during a match and enter competitive play as Ken. The two fighters use the same basic moves and special techniques, with their main differences initially being visual.

Ken is sometimes confused with Guile because both are American characters in the broader series, but Guile debuted as a playable fighter in Street Fighter II. Charlie Nash is also associated with Guile’s story, while Cody Travers belongs to the Final Fight universe and later Street Fighter games.

Ken’s role developed substantially in later installments. Street Fighter II made him one of the selectable World Warriors, and subsequent games gave him a more aggressive style and a distinct identity separate from Ryu.
