Which American general accepted Japan's surrender for the Allies at the 1945 ceremony?

The story behind the answer

Douglas MacArthur accepted Japan's surrender for the Allies at the 1945 ceremony.

MacArthur was the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers and presided over the signing aboard USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945. He signed the instrument in his capacity as supreme commander after Mamoru Shigemitsu and Yoshijiro Umezu signed for Japan.

MacArthur had commanded Allied forces in the Southwest Pacific Area during much of the Pacific War. After Japan's capitulation, he led the occupation of Japan and oversaw major political, legal, and social reforms.

Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz signed immediately after MacArthur as the United States representative. This sometimes causes confusion, but Nimitz did not accept the surrender on behalf of all Allied powers; MacArthur held that role.
