Which American general accepted Japan's surrender for the Allied Powers aboard USS Missouri?

The story behind the answer

Douglas MacArthur accepted Japan's surrender for the Allied Powers aboard USS Missouri.

MacArthur was the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers and had commanded major Allied operations in the Southwest Pacific. During the September 2, 1945, ceremony, he signed the Instrument of Surrender in that capacity after the two Japanese representatives had signed.

MacArthur delivered brief opening and closing remarks, emphasizing the hope that the ceremony would lead to peace rather than renewed conflict. He then supervised the signatures of representatives from the United States and eight other Allied governments.

Chester Nimitz also signed the instrument, but he did so as the United States representative after MacArthur. Nimitz was the commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet and Pacific Ocean Areas, whereas MacArthur presided over the surrender ceremony as the senior Allied commander present.
