Which American department-store chain filed for bankruptcy in 1992 after the collapse of its leveraged expansion?

The story behind the answer

Macy’s filed for bankruptcy in 1992 after the collapse of its leveraged expansion.

Macy’s is one of America’s best-known department-store names, but its parent company faced severe financial problems in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Expansion, acquisitions, and debt left the business vulnerable when retail conditions weakened. Macy’s filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on January 27, 1992.

The company reorganized its debt and operations and emerged from bankruptcy in December 1994. It later expanded through acquisitions, including the purchase of Federated Department Stores’ major department-store assets. Federated itself eventually adopted the Macy’s name in 2007.

Macy’s bankruptcy is often confused with the later failures of retailers such as Sears and JCPenney. Those companies had different ownership histories and filed at different times. Macy’s continued operating after its restructuring and remains associated with the annual Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.
