Which American automaker produced the Ford Mustang?

The story behind the answer

The American automaker that produced the Ford Mustang is Ford.

Ford introduced the Mustang on April 17, 1964, as a sporty, affordable coupe and convertible derived from the compact Ford Falcon. Its long-hood, short-deck styling helped create the “pony car” category, positioned between ordinary family cars and expensive sports cars.

The launch was an extraordinary success. Ford had expected roughly 100,000 annual sales, but more than 400,000 Mustangs were sold during the first year. The model reached one million sales within two years and inspired rivals including the Chevrolet Camaro, Pontiac Firebird, AMC Javelin, and Dodge Challenger.

A common mix-up is confusing the Mustang with those competing models. Plymouth, Dodge, and Chevrolet each produced notable performance cars, but none manufactured the Mustang. Ford has kept the nameplate in continuous production since 1964, although the separate electric Mustang Mach-E is an SUV rather than a conventional two-door Mustang.
