Which American automaker produced the Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in hybrid?

The story behind the answer

General Motors produced the Chevrolet Volt, the plug-in hybrid sold under GM’s Chevrolet brand.

The Volt was developed as an electrified vehicle with a lithium-ion battery, electric drive system, and gasoline engine-generator. Its first-generation production began in 2010, and its model years ran from 2011 through 2015; a redesigned second generation followed for 2016–2019.

The Volt is often called a plug-in hybrid, although GM and many technical descriptions classify it as an extended-range electric vehicle. In normal operation, electricity drives the wheels, while the gasoline engine can generate electricity after the battery’s charge is depleted.

The Chevrolet name can cause confusion because Chevrolet is a brand rather than a separate automaker. Chevrolet belongs to General Motors, while Tesla, Ford, and Chrysler did not produce the Chevrolet Volt.
