Which American author wrote 'To Kill a Mockingbird'?

The story behind the answer

Harper Lee wrote the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

Published in 1960, the novel is narrated by Scout Finch, a child growing up in the fictional Alabama town of Maycomb during the Great Depression. Its central conflict involves Scout’s father, attorney Atticus Finch, defending Tom Robinson, a Black man falsely accused of assaulting a white woman. Through Scout’s perspective, the book explores racism, injustice, empathy, and moral courage.

Lee drew on observations from her childhood in Monroeville, Alabama, and loosely based some characters and events on people and incidents she knew. Her childhood friendship with Truman Capote, who later became a prominent writer, is another frequently discussed part of her literary background.

The book quickly became a major success and won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1961. Readers sometimes confuse Lee with Capote because of their close friendship, or with actors and characters associated with the famous film adaptation. The author of the novel, however, was Harper Lee, whose work became a modern American classic.
