Which American author wrote 'The Last of the Mohicans'?

The story behind the answer

American author James Fenimore Cooper wrote The Last of the Mohicans.

Published in 1826, the novel is set in 1757 during the French and Indian War, the North American theater of the Seven Years’ War. It follows characters including Natty Bumppo, Chingachgook, Uncas, and the Munro sisters through the contested wilderness around Lake George and the Adirondacks.

The book is the second novel in Cooper’s five-part Leatherstocking Tales, although it is often read independently and is his best-known work today. Cooper developed the idea after visiting the Adirondack region in 1825. His daughter later recalled that the caves near Glens Falls helped inspire the setting for the romance.

A frequent historical mix-up concerns the title and the tribal names. Cooper used Uncas as a Mohican character, but the historical Uncas was a famous sachem of the Mohegan people of Connecticut. The novel also reflects 19th-century ideas about Native Americans that modern readers often examine critically. Mark Twain later mocked Cooper’s prose in his 1895 essay “Fenimore Cooper’s Literary Offenses.”
