Which American author wrote 'A Farewell to Arms'?

The story behind the answer

The American author who wrote A Farewell to Arms is Ernest Hemingway.

First published in 1929, the novel is set during the Italian campaign of World War I. Its narrator, Frederic Henry, is an American serving as a lieutenant in the Italian ambulance corps. He falls in love with Catherine Barkley, an English nurse, while the war steadily undermines his faith in military duty and heroic ideals.

The story draws partly on Hemingway's own experience in Italy. In 1918, he served as an ambulance driver and was seriously wounded by mortar fire. The novel is fictional, however, and readers should not treat every event or character as a direct autobiography. Agnes von Kurowsky, a nurse who cared for Hemingway, is often cited as an inspiration for Catherine.

A Farewell to Arms became Hemingway's first best-seller and helped secure his reputation as a major modern American writer. Its title is sometimes confused with a poem by George Peele, but the novel itself belongs to Hemingway.
