Which American airline filed for bankruptcy in 1991 after fuel-price shocks and the Gulf War?

The story behind the answer

Pan Am filed for bankruptcy in 1991 after fuel-price shocks and the Gulf War.

Pan American World Airways filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on January 8, 1991. The airline had faced years of financial pressure after deregulation, rising fuel costs, and intense competition from domestic and international rivals.

The 1990 Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and the Gulf War further reduced demand for air travel and increased operating pressures. Pan Am sold valuable assets, including routes and aircraft, but the measures did not restore the company’s financial stability.

Pan Am ceased operations on December 4, 1991. Its collapse ended one of the most recognizable names in commercial aviation, although parts of its former network and brand continued under other companies.
