The AMC two-seat muscle car produced from 1968 to 1970 was the AMX.
American Motors Corporation introduced the AMX as a compact, two-seat performance coupe during the 1968 model year. It was closely related to the four-seat AMC Javelin, but its wheelbase was shortened and the rear seat was removed. That gave the AMX a distinctive place between a traditional muscle car and a sports car.
The AMX competed directly with the Chevrolet Corvette while selling for substantially less. Its available AMC V8 engines included 290-, 343-, and 390-cubic-inch versions in the early years, with a 360-cubic-inch option for 1970. The car was praised for combining strong acceleration with more agile handling than many larger American muscle cars.
The two-seat AMX lasted only three model years, and production ended after 1970. From 1971 onward, the AMX name was applied to high-performance versions of the four-seat Javelin, so those later cars should not be confused with the original two-seat model. AMC built 19,134 U.S. two-seat AMXs across the three model years.
