Answer
Potsdam Declaration
Answer
Potsdam Declaration
The Potsdam Declaration, issued on 26 July 1945, demanded Japan’s surrender before the war ended.
The declaration was issued by the United States, the United Kingdom, and China during the Potsdam Conference. It called on the Japanese government to proclaim the unconditional surrender of all Japanese armed forces and warned that refusal would bring “prompt and utter destruction.” The Soviet Union was not initially a signatory because it remained neutral toward Japan at that time.
The declaration outlined broad postwar goals, including the elimination of militarism, the occupation of selected Japanese territory, and the establishment of a peaceful government. It did not explicitly settle the emperor’s future, an ambiguity that became important during Japan’s surrender discussions.
Japan’s formal surrender document later stated that Japan accepted the provisions of the Potsdam Declaration. The declaration is therefore a demand and set of terms, not the final surrender instrument itself. The Cairo Declaration of 1943 was an earlier Allied statement concerning Japan’s territorial future.
