Which Allied signatory accidentally signed below his designated line on Japan's surrender document?
Answer
Lawrence Moore Cosgrave
Answer
Lawrence Moore Cosgrave
Canadian representative Lawrence Moore Cosgrave accidentally signed below his designated line on Japan's surrender document.
Cosgrave was Canada's representative at the 2 September 1945 surrender ceremony. On the Japanese copy of the Instrument of Surrender, he signed below the line intended for Canada rather than directly on it. His mistake shifted the signatures that followed out of alignment with the printed country labels.
The error was corrected during the ceremony. General Richard K. Sutherland, MacArthur's chief of staff, crossed out the preprinted titles and rewrote the Allied country names by hand in their proper positions. He initialed each alteration, and the Japanese delegation accepted the amended document.
Cosgrave had been blinded in one eye by a World War I injury, a detail often mentioned in accounts of the signing. The incident did not invalidate the surrender. The corrected copies became part of the official record, and the Allied and Japanese versions are preserved as important artifacts of the end of World War II.
