Which Allied representative signed Japan’s surrender for the Soviet Union?

The story behind the answer

Kuzma Derevyanko signed Japan’s surrender for the Soviet Union.

Lieutenant General Kuzma Derevyanko was the Soviet representative at the Tokyo Bay ceremony on 2 September 1945. He signed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender after representatives of the United States, China, and the United Kingdom.

The Soviet Union had declared war on Japan on 8 August 1945, after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and shortly before the bombing of Nagasaki. Soviet forces then launched an offensive against Japanese forces in Manchuria and other territories.

Derevyanko later became associated with the Soviet delegation to the Allied occupation authorities in Japan. His signature is sometimes overlooked because Douglas MacArthur and Chester Nimitz received much of the ceremony’s attention, but the Soviet Union was one of the principal Allied signatories.
