Which Allied proclamation did Japan accept before announcing its surrender in August 1945?

The story behind the answer

Japan accepted the Potsdam Declaration before announcing its surrender in August 1945.

The declaration was issued on 26 July 1945 by the United States, the United Kingdom, and China. It demanded Japan’s unconditional surrender and outlined broad terms for the country’s postwar future, including the removal of Japanese militarism.

After the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Soviet declaration of war, Japan accepted the declaration’s terms. The Japanese government added a condition concerning the status of Emperor Hirohito, while the Allies replied that the emperor would be subject to the authority of the Supreme Commander.

Hirohito’s radio broadcast on 15 August announced acceptance of the terms. The Potsdam Declaration should not be confused with the Cairo Declaration of 1943, which discussed Allied aims in Asia, or with the Japanese Instrument of Surrender, the document signed later aboard USS Missouri.
