Which Allied general signed Japan's Instrument of Surrender on behalf of the Allied nations?

The story behind the answer

Douglas MacArthur signed Japan’s Instrument of Surrender on behalf of the Allied nations.

MacArthur was the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers and presided over the ceremony aboard USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945. He signed the Allied copy of the document before representatives of the other Allied countries added their signatures.

Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz signed next as the United States representative. Representatives from China, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, Australia, Canada, France, the Netherlands, and New Zealand also signed. Their participation reflected the multinational character of the war against Japan.

MacArthur’s role continued after the ceremony. He directed the Allied occupation of Japan and oversaw major political, legal, and social reforms. His position as supreme commander is why he is associated with the formal surrender, although Nimitz was the senior U.S. naval representative and did not sign first.
