Which Allied general presided over Japan’s formal surrender ceremony in Tokyo Bay?
Answer
Douglas MacArthur
Answer
Douglas MacArthur
Douglas MacArthur presided over Japan’s formal surrender ceremony in Tokyo Bay.
MacArthur served as Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers and accepted the Japanese Instrument of Surrender on 2 September 1945. In his opening remarks, he said the purpose of the ceremony was to conclude a formal agreement and not to stage a military victory display. He signed for the Allied powers, while Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz signed as the United States representative.
MacArthur had commanded Allied forces in the Southwest Pacific Area and had returned to the Philippines in October 1944 after being forced to leave in 1942. After the surrender, he directed the Allied occupation of Japan from Tokyo. His authority covered demilitarization, political reforms, and the reconstruction of Japan’s institutions.
The ceremony included representatives of the United States, China, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, Australia, Canada, France, the Netherlands, and New Zealand. MacArthur remained a central figure in occupied Japan until 1951.
