Which Allied general formally accepted Japan's surrender on behalf of the Allied powers?
Answer
Douglas MacArthur
Answer
Douglas MacArthur
Douglas MacArthur formally accepted Japan's surrender on behalf of the Allied powers.
MacArthur signed the Instrument of Surrender at about 9:08 a.m. on September 2, 1945, aboard USS Missouri. He acted as Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, the position responsible for directing the occupation and implementing the surrender arrangements.
After MacArthur signed, Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz signed as the United States representative. Representatives of eight other Allied governments then signed, including China, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, Australia, Canada, France, the Netherlands, and New Zealand.
MacArthur also delivered brief concluding remarks after the signatures. His role is sometimes confused with Nimitz's because Nimitz was the senior U.S. naval representative at the ceremony. MacArthur, however, accepted the surrender for the Allied powers as a whole, while Nimitz signed specifically for the United States.
