Answer
Douglas MacArthur
Douglas MacArthur accepted Japan’s surrender aboard USS Missouri in 1945.
MacArthur was Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers and represented the Allied nations at the formal ceremony on September 2, 1945. After the Japanese representatives signed, he signed the Instrument of Surrender in his official capacity.
MacArthur had been a central American commander in the Pacific. He commanded Allied forces in the Southwest Pacific Area and returned to the Philippines in October 1944 after promising to return following Japan’s 1942 conquest of the islands.
Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz signed immediately after MacArthur as the United States representative. Other Allied signatories followed, including representatives of China, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, Australia, Canada, France, the Netherlands, and New Zealand. MacArthur also delivered the ceremony’s opening and closing remarks.
