Which Alibaba online shopping website was launched in 2003? Taobao. Alibaba launched Taobao in 2003 as it moved beyond business-to-business wholesale and into consumer e-commerce.
The timing was strategic. In that same year, eBay acquired Eachnet, then China’s leading online-auction platform. Taobao entered the market as a rival consumer-to-consumer service, attracting sellers with free listings and building trust through buyer-seller messaging and escrow-style payments handled through Alipay.
Taobao’s name comes from the Chinese phrase meaning “search for treasure.” The platform connects individual shoppers and small merchants, primarily serving Chinese-speaking markets. It is owned by Alibaba Group, but it is not the same service as Tmall: Taobao traditionally emphasizes consumer-to-consumer and small-business storefronts, while Tmall focuses more on brands and established retailers.
Taobao quickly became a major force in Chinese online shopping. Its market share rose sharply between 2003 and 2005, while eBay’s Chinese operation declined and ultimately closed its local site in 2006. Alibaba later developed a broader ecosystem around payments, logistics and digital commerce.
