Supernatural made Santana the first Latin rock act to win the Grammy for Album of the Year, at the 2000 ceremony.
Released in 1999, Supernatural was Santana’s commercial comeback album after a period of reduced mainstream visibility. It paired Carlos Santana’s guitar with a wide range of guest performers, including Rob Thomas, Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, and CeeLo Green.
The album’s success was driven by singles such as “Smooth,” featuring Rob Thomas, and “Maria Maria.” It won nine Grammys, tying the record for the most awards won by an album at a single ceremony at that time. Santana’s victory also highlighted the Grammys’ recognition of Latin-influenced rock within the general categories.
Santana had released acclaimed albums such as Abraxas decades earlier, but Supernatural was the project that earned the historic Album of the Year honor.
