The sculpture resembles a stage set or miniature building, but its open structure prevents it from functioning as an ordinary model of a palace. Its title evokes a private, nocturnal state of mind.

Giacometti later explained that the work grew from an intense romantic experience and from the feeling of constructing a world that could collapse at any moment. Its fragile appearance and dreamlike organization connect it to Surrealism, although Giacometti later moved toward more direct studies of the human figure.

The sculpture was made in 1932 and is now in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It should not be confused with Giacometti’s later bronze sculptures, which are usually associated with existential postwar art.
