Which airline was the first low-cost carrier, founded in California in 1949?
Answer
Pacific Southwest Airlines
Answer
Pacific Southwest Airlines
Pacific Southwest Airlines was the first low-cost carrier, beginning operations in California in 1949.
Founded by Ken Friedkin, Pacific Southwest Airlines started flying between San Diego and Oakland on 6 May 1949. It became known for low fares, colorful branding, and a cheerful onboard image, helping establish many features later associated with budget airlines.
The airline operated primarily within California for much of its history. Its success demonstrated that a carrier could stimulate demand by offering affordable fares on short-haul routes. Pacific Southwest was eventually acquired by USAir in 1987, and its identity was absorbed into the larger airline.
Southwest Airlines is often called the first major modern low-cost airline, but it was founded later, in 1967, and began flying in 1971. Pacific Southwest therefore holds the earlier historical distinction.
