Which airline operated US Airways Flight 1549, which ditched in New York’s Hudson River in 2009?

The story behind the answer

US Airways operated Flight 1549, which ditched in New York’s Hudson River on January 15, 2009.

The Airbus A320 took off from LaGuardia Airport for Charlotte, North Carolina, with 155 people aboard. Shortly after departure, it struck a flock of Canada geese and lost thrust in both engines. Captain Chesley Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffrey Skiles ditched the aircraft on the river.

All 155 people aboard survived. Nearby ferries and emergency responders helped evacuate passengers from the aircraft’s wings and life rafts in cold conditions. The event became widely known as the “Miracle on the Hudson.”

US Airways later merged with American Airlines in 2013, and the US Airways brand was retired in 2015. That later corporate history is why some accounts incorrectly identify American Airlines as the operator of the flight.
