Which airline alliance began operations in 1999 with American Airlines, British Airways, and Cathay Pacific among its founders?

The story behind the answer

Oneworld began operations in 1999, with American Airlines, British Airways, and Cathay Pacific among its founding members.

Oneworld was announced in 1998 and launched on 1 February 1999. Its original member airlines also included Qantas and Canadian Airlines. The alliance was designed to coordinate global networks, frequent-flyer benefits, airport lounges, and connecting travel.

Oneworld followed Star Alliance, which had launched in 1997, and preceded SkyTeam, which began in 2000. These alliances allow independent airlines to cooperate while retaining separate corporate identities and brands.

Canadian Airlines later left the alliance after being acquired by Air Canada, which belongs to Star Alliance. Oneworld’s membership has therefore changed over time. The alliance’s founding date is sometimes confused with the announcement date, but its operating launch date was 1 February 1999.
