Which airfield did Douglas MacArthur use when he arrived in Japan on August 30, 1945?
Answer
Atsugi Airfield
Answer
Atsugi Airfield
Douglas MacArthur arrived at Atsugi Airfield in Japan on August 30, 1945.
Atsugi was a Japanese naval air base before the surrender. An advance American party had landed there on August 28 to establish airfield operations and communications, making it one of the first important American footholds in Japan during the occupation.
MacArthur arrived two days later as Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers. Photographs of his arrival at Atsugi became a well-known visual symbol of the transition from wartime combat to Allied occupation.
Atsugi is sometimes confused with Haneda, another major airfield near Tokyo, or with the location of the formal surrender ceremony. The ceremony took place aboard USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2, while MacArthur’s first arrival in Japan was at Atsugi.
